KAMAY Film Screening: A Story of Resilience and Lost Dreams

20/05/2025 - From 19h30 to 21h30 - Members & Guests
Registration mandatory

Deep in the mountains of central Afghanistan, education is both a privilege and a fragile hope for a better future. For Freshta and her Hazara family, Zahra—the eldest sister—embodied that hope, defying the odds to secure a place at Kabul University. But as she pursued her thesis on the medicinal properties of a local plant, "kamay," her path was repeatedly obstructed. What should have been a milestone became a battle for recognition—until, just weeks before graduation, Zahra took her own life.

KAMAY is a powerful documentary that follows the relentless fight of Zahra’s family to uncover the truth behind her tragic death. As her younger sister Freshta prepares to enter university, the weight of Zahra’s struggle and the growing shadow of the Taliban’s return threaten to crush what little hope remains.

Through stunning cinematography and deeply personal storytelling, director Ilyas Yourish—himself a Hazara and former journalist—offers a poignant look at the realities of systemic discrimination, the right to education, and the price of resilience in a country scarred by history.

A must-watch for those who believe in the power of education, justice, and the stories that need to be told.

The screening will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with director Ilyas Yourish—an opportunity to dive deeper into the making of the film and the urgent realities it brings to light.

A symbolic contribution of 1 euro will be requested for the screening.
